tropopause
The atmospheric boundary layer separating the troposphere and the stratosphere. The height of the tropopause varies from 8 kilometers in polar region to up to 20 kilometers in the tropics.
The upper boundary of the troposphere , usually characterized by an abrupt change in lapse rate from positive (decreasing temperature with height) to neutral or negative (temperature constant or increasing with height). See sounding .
