shear-driven turbulence
Continuous creation of irregular eddy motions in a flow due to shear instability. In plane parallel flow the motion will become unstable if the shear is sufficiently large. If the flow is stably stratified (dense air below sparse), the amount of shear necessary for shear-driven turbulence will be larger.
