| Definition Of: |
linewidth (absorption spectrum)
Width of a dark absorption line (interval) in the spectrum of light from a gas, caused by gas molecules absorbing at that particular wavelength. Finite linewidth can be caused by the finite lifetime of the molecular substance, Doppler broadening, and collision broadening (shortening the lifetime of molecular states by collisions).
