foraminifera
An order of marine protozoans that live near the surface (planktonic) or on the bottom (benthic) of the ocean. The foraminifera are microorganisms with hard shells of calcium carbonate and other calcium-containing compounds. The remains of these and other organisms form the sediments of the ocean floors.
