baroclinic wave
A wave that develops in a highly baroclinic atmosphere as a result of baroclinic instability. Baroclinic waves develop in the region of strong temperature gradients. Horizontal temperature advection is required for baroclinic waves to develop. Baroclinic waves are also referred to as baroclinic cyclones or baroclinic disturbances. During baroclinic wave development, waves tilt westward with height.
