baroclinic instability
An amplification of a perturbation owing to the vertical shear and high wind speeds found in the jet stream. Only waves with wavelengths on the synoptic scale (1,000 kilometers) tend to amplify with this type of instability. Baroclinic instability converts potential energy to kinetic energy and is an important mechanism in the global energy balance.
